The answer to the question - what is the purpose of Maya? - is Love. Is that so? Yes. The purpose of Maya is Love. To understand why Maya means Love we must first understand what reality is, for this although the secondary meaning of Maya is 'illusion' or 'that which is not'; the primary meaning- and purpose of Maya - which is Self really - is Love. So is that (तात्); the original meaning of the word Maya survives to this day in Nepali where it means Love. Now to return to the nature of reality; there is in reality only one Self not wanting to be by itself. It is not good to be alone it is said rightfully so. Hence the purpose of Maya. The purpose of Maya so Self could experience Companionship. The purpose of Maya so Self could experience Friendship. The purpose of Maya so Self could experience Love. Maya exists so Self could love and be loved in endless return. All this is according to One's own Love (स्व-स्व-प्रेम-अनुरूप). In conclusion. Self has engineered itself to perceive itself as diverse, NOT to cause itself suffering, no, Self has engineered itself to perceive itself as diverse for Companionship, Friendship, Love. Hence why the personality of the Godhead, which is Self really, is Love. Love verily the essence of Self. Self is essentially Love.
