The question is not what makes us conscious but what makes us unconscious as in what veils us? The answer is self. Self is at any time one not wanting to be alone. As such self has created itself to perceive itself as differentiated so not to be alone. The veil being the bodymind complex. So are you saying that there is no free will? Not exactly. Remember, there is only oneself. Self is always free but wills companionship. In conclusion. The purpose of self is companionship, friendship, love.
