The answer to the question - why did shiva and shakti split - is illogical for there is only one shiva, or, to be more precise, there is only oneself. It is self which perceives itself as differentiated so not to be by itself. It is self which perceives itself as differentiated for companionship. It is self which perceives itself as differentiated for friendship. It is self which perceives itself as differentiated for love. Simplified.
