The True Definition & Meaning of Shiva: Uncovering the Forgotten Etymology of Shiva.

It is thought that the origin of the word "Shiva" comes from the Sanskrit root "Shri" which means "auspicious" or "gracious". Another idea is that the etymological meaning of the word "Shiva" comes from the word "Shambhu" which means "One who causes happiness" or "One who is easily pleased". Both are good interpretations. But truth is Simple. Simple as in One. As such allow me to provide the correct origin and meaning of the word Shiva. The root of the word Shiva is derived from "Shva, Śvā, Sva (श्वा)" which quite literally means "Self" i.e. "the Self" in Sanskrit. A beautiful verse in Patanjali's Yogasutra (II.44) supports this by urging individuals to study themselves in order to discover the divine. So, while there are various stories and legends about the origin and meaning of the name "Shiva," "Shiva is Self (Sva, स्व)."
