The Purpose of Biodiversity is Companionship.
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) defines biodiversity as "the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems." This definition encompasses the diversity of genes, species, and ecosystems on Earth, as well as the ecological and evolutionary processes that sustain them. The CBD recognizes that biodiversity is essential for the functioning of ecosystems and provides a wide range of benefits to humanity, including food, medicine, clean water, and air. The conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity are therefore crucial for maintaining a healthy and resilient planet. I believe this is a very good but also very safe and incomplete definition for it does not describe the purpose of biodiversity in the first place. The purpose of biodiversity is companionship. It's always been about companionship right from the start. ~ Wald Wassermann, Physicist
